Fire safety training and the law

Employers must take reasonable steps to reduce the risk from fire and ensure safe escape for both employees and visitors.

They must provide adequate safety training when people are first employed and when they are exposed to new or increased risks — and appoint competent persons with enough training to remain effective against fire hazards.

Employer duties include

  • Train all employees at induction and when risks increase
  • Appoint one or more competent fire safety persons
  • Give those people enough training to stay effective
  • Level 1 for all staff · Level 2 for fire wardens
