Who’s it for?
The Level 1 Food Hygiene Certificate is intended for learners working in low-risk roles where there is an element of food handling. This could include bar workers, waiting staff, healthcare workers, kitchen porters and stock/store room staff. There are no prerequisites for this qualification. It is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in English or equivalent.
What’s it about?
Learners gaining this qualification will know that food safety is the responsibility of everyone involved in the storage, preparation, processing, packing and handling of food. The subjects covered are regarded by the Food Standards Agency as being important to ensure good practice and the production of safe food.
How is it assessed?
There is a half-hour 15-question multiple-choice test at the end of the day and you need 10 out of 15 to pass. Following the course you will be sent a Level 1 Award in Food Safety in Catering, Retail or Manufacturing certificate — the choice of which exam you take is yours. The certificate is generally considered to remain current for three years.
